Tire Size and Load Rating Charts
We're building a plain-English reference for dually tires. Until it's ready, here's the short version from Issue #3's Rubber Science:
Load range is the letter on the sidewall that tells you how much the tire is built to carry and at what pressure. On heavy-duty pickups you'll usually see Load Range E, often called "10-ply rated," even though modern tires don't literally have ten plies. Here's the dually twist: many LT tires list two load ratings, one for single use and one for dual use. The dual one is lower because paired tires never share the load perfectly. A tire's load capacity depends on its inflation pressure, so run the pressure on your door-jamb placard. That goes for all six, inner duals included. And match your duals. One major tire maker's rule: no more than a quarter inch difference in diameter or 4/32 in tread depth between duals.
